Posing Tips Part 3: How To Hold the Lead

Reins and lead ropes, what do you have your clients do with them so they don’t look so awkward in photos?

I was taught the 4-H figure-eight as the safest way to stay in control of your horse while keeping both you and your horse safe. However, it creates a lot of leather in the photo! I have a couple of favorite holds for the reins/lead ropes in a photo.

A simple loop in a circle:

Hold the reins/lead rope in one place:

Up and around the horse’s neck:
