Things I Wish I Learned Sooner Part 1

I bought my first camera in 2011.

I started my business in 2013.

I went full-time in 2017.

…and there are so many things that I wish I figured out earlier!

This new summer blog series is going to explore a few of the lessons it took me entirely too long to learn.

Use the Horse to Block the Ugly

Horses are big, and with a little bit of strategy their bodies are able to hide a lot of undesirable things in the background. I have spent entirely too much time editing out buildings, barns, cars, trucks, trailers, manure piles, trash bins… you get the idea. A simple move on my part can clean up the background and save me HOURS in post-production.

There is a white car in the image above that I could’ve cloned out. Instead, I took a step to my left to eliminate the distraction: no PhotoShop required!

I am embarrassed to admit how long it took me to REALLY pay attention to what was in my viewfinder and carefully compose the image with less distractions. Now, I spend significantly less time editing images by making these small tweaks while I take the image.
